9th Annual Mobridge Ice Tournament

MOBRIDGE, SD - The Mobridge Area Chamber of Commerce Tourism Committee has been busy planning their 9th Annual Ice fishing Tournament to be held January 9th, 2010. Surprisingly to the committee, entries have been flooding into the chamber office since the tournament opened for entries on October 1st. “I am absolutely amazed by the response we have gotten from our tournament anglers this year,” stated Jesse Konold, Mobridge Chamber President. “As of now, we have 326 2-person teams registered, and it looks like we will have a full field of 400 teams by next week, if we keep pace.”

The success of the annual event is very apparent. “We have a great chamber, a great tourism committee that is passionate about what our area has to offer, their willingness to think outside the box has grown the tournament year after year,” said Konold. The tournament started in 2001 as a one person ice fishing tournament. That year they had 50 individual entries, followed by 50 teams in 2002. Last year the tournament had a field of 397 teams that tried their luck at over $75,000 in cash and prizes. For the 2010 tournament the committee has accumulated over $90,000 in cash and prizes. Rick Bolduan, tourism committee co-chair, chuckled and said “our big prize the first year was a Mr. Heater, now we are at $90,000 worth of stuff…it’s amazing.” Bolduan went on to say, “if it wasn’t for our committee, volunteers, the business sector and citizens of Mobridge, and our sponsors we would not be able to put on an event of this size.”

Not only is it a great tournament to participate in, but it is also has a great economic impact to the Mobridge area during a time that most communities are sleepy towns. Anglers from 12 states and Canada have registered for the 2010 tournament, which will allow Mobridge to showcase their restaurants, lodging providers, and local establishments. “We always get great comments from our anglers about the people in Mobridge, and South Dakota in general, and it is our people that keep bringing in these anglers to our city and state.”
