PWT Coming to Bismarck
The Mercury Championship returns to Bismarck Oct. 13-15. During past In-Fisherman Professional Walleye Trail Championships in North Dakota, the walleye fans turned out in record numbers.

Leading the 51-man field of expert walleye anglers is the Johnsonville Brats Angler of the Year Ron Seelhoff. After a grueling 8-tournament season, Seelhoff accumulated the most points, won the most money, claimed his sixth PWT victory, and brings a previous Bismarck Championship title with him. Michigan pro Bill St. Peter will go out in second position, followed by Bismarck's Sheldon Meidinger, who comes off his best year ever. Wisconsin's Tom Gatzke was the Tommy Docks Regional Angler of the Year...

FBO's Newest Addition
I'd like take a few minutes of your reading time to extend a warm welcome to Don Padgett as FBO's newest field staff member.

Don approached me not to long ago asking if considerations were being made for field staff members. As always, FBO is continually looking for individuals with enthusiastic and active lifestyles in the outdoors. After talking with Don, it was clear he would be a perfect fit for many reasons.

During our discussion I knew it would be a waste to ask what Don considered as his outdoor passion. You see, during our discussion, Don made many references to hunting upland throughout the entire United States. However, that was just a warm up to his true passion of training man's best friend for the field. Surpassing over 30 years, Don has dedicated his...

Gregg Joins the Team
While the seasons continue to show signs of change, we follow in stride beginning preparations for our favorite outdoor activities. Much the same is true for the Total Outdoor Network. Although the network can't physically "hunt" or "fish", it can prepare itself in providing its viewers the best possible portal to communicate and share the outdoor world. Today is no different, as the network proudly announces another field staff addition by welcoming Gregg Kathol to Nebraska Outdoors.

Currently, Gregg resides in Nebraska after recently moving from South Dakota to the great state of Nebraska. Gregg said moving from South Dakota would be tough given all the outdoor opportunities he had come accustomed to in South Dakota. However, he assured that venturing into the Nebraska outdoors realm would be an exciting endeavor offering similar and even new opportunities from South Dakota...

That statement alone can basically describe Dave’s experience in the outdoors. Not in that he puts himself in bad predicaments but that he’s spent countless hours doing what he loves to do most—hunting and fishing!

As a native of western Minnesota, Dave grew up hunting and fishing with his father. Together they spanned the Upper-Midwest hunting big game, varmint, waterfowl, upland, to you name it in Minnesota, South Dakota, and into Montana...

Salmo #4 Hornet on Sale Again at TON! $4.75

One of the hottest baits of 2005.  The Hornet Hysteria has gripped several of the top walleye fisheries this past summer!  Anglers have begged for the Hornets because they work.  In fact, anglers we know have swore to us that the Hornets are said to out fish many of the other baits two to one.  Right now, anglers are crushing the walleyes on both Devils Lake and Lake of the Woods by using Hornets behind lead core and downriggers.

It might not look it, but this little crankbait is totally revolutionary. Made from high density foam, not flimsy balsa wood or hollow plastic. The Hornet is a super durable crankbait that has a consistant action that is fine tuned by tank testing. The Hornet’s rod shaking action throws off vibration and flash like no other crankbait.  For the month of August, 2005, during the peak of the crankbait trolling season!  We at the Total Outdoor Network are selling Salmo #4 Hornets for $4.75.  This is a hot deal for a hot lure.  Limited quantities, the sale ends when we run out.

Daren Joins the Total Outdoor Network
Fishing Buddy Outdoors along with the entire Total Outdoor Network is pleased to announce Daren Schneider as it’s newest field staff member. Daren grew up in Bismarck, ND but moved after getting married in 1998. As an outdoor enthusiast, he wasn’t too disappointed in moving to Madison, WI. The state provided superb muskie and crappie fishing. Furthermore, Daren logged many hours on the Great Lakes chasing trophy-sized walleye. And it was on the northern rivers of Wisconsin that Daren picked up a new passion…bass fishing! Daren said, “I spent a lot of time learning seasonal patterns for smallmouths and fishing largemouth bass often located in the ‘slope’ or weeds so thick you couldn’t drive a boat through.”

Not too long ago, Daren moved back to the great state of North Dakota and continues to enjoy the outdoors. As with most in this great state, Daren enjoys all aspects including hunting upland and waterfowl, working with his new pup Madison, fishing, and putting venison on the table...

He has been an outdoor journalist for five years, writing "Our Outdoors"; a column published for the past four years in his hometown newspaper, the Valley City Times-Record.

He is an avid bass angler, having grown up on the Sheyenne River chasing after the wily smallmouth bass each summer. He also enjoys pursuing largemouth bass in the Detroit Lakes, MN region and in southeastern North Dakota. Though bass are his primary quarry, Simonson also enjoys jigging for river walleyes and spring pike fishing as well as fly fishing for bass, trout and panfish...

U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Seeks Proposals from States to Work with Private Landowners to Conserve Wildlife Habitat
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service today announced it is seeking proposals from States and territories for funding under the Bush Administration?s innovative Landowner Incentive Program (LIP). This forward-looking program, managed by the Service, is making $19 million in Federal grant money available to State and territorial fish and wildlife agencies for private landowners under the President?s FY 2005 budget.

"Private landowners and conservation groups want to help conserve fish and wildlife but the costs of protecting, restoring, and managing habitat can be prohibitive," said Service Director Steve Williams. "The Bush Administration is lending a hand to support the efforts of our valued partners."

Video
Over the years we've put out videos when possible. From the bandwidth that has gone through the site we would have to argue they have been popular. However, video has proven to be a full time effort and all of us at FBO have to tend to our jobs, family and of course hunting and fishing! But, we also like video and are currently going through some planning on providing you fresh videos.

In planning, the video section will temporarily be off line while we set up a studio and prepare materials. Look for future videos varying from product reviews, online interviews, to whatever else we find fit or YOU would like to see. There may be some “shootem” up videos but most will focus on informational topics…give us ideas or be interviewed showing a trick or concern on an outdoor issue and we’ll get it on the site!

I've received some emails on video ideas and they are being considered. If you have an idea please email Tim Sandstrom with ideas or other comments. Your input is greatly appreciated and thanks for supporting FBO and don't worry, the videos will be back online soon!

Welcome Home!
Once again I ask all the FBO viewers to either show support through praise, appearance or just prayers and thoughts for another wave of troops returning home from Iraq. North Dakota has the highest number of troops serving (National Guard) and their courage and bravery has represented our great state and nation well! Tragically, we've lost some fine young men and women in protecting freedom and liberty and they must not die in vain, rather as heros! Please send your blessings and sympathy to those surviving fallen soldiers.

As stated, tomorrow (Feb 16th), another happy and emotional day will repeat itself as North Dakota community's welcome home 300 more soldiers from the 141st Engineer Combat Batallion. The soldiers will be flying into Bismarck, Fargo and possibly Minot in the later afternoon hours. The citizens of North Dakota whom have shown support will no doubt be standing waiting to welcome the 141st home but if you haven't done so yourself, I highly recommend it. It gives a great sense of pride to our soldiers and gives us at home a feeling that is unexplainable...

Suggestions for Providing Great Tasting Pheasant
It looks like warm weather is going to hang around for a while, so hunters are urged to take extra care in the field to properly care for the pheasants and quail they take during the early part of the hunting seasons to ensure the meat remains full of flavor and safe to eat.

Birds killed during hot or warm weather may spoil rapidly if they aren’t cleaned and cooled shortly after being taken. Even in cooler weather, it is important to draw birds quickly after they are down. Hunters shouldn’t expect uncleaned game birds carried in a canvas game pouch for hours, or thrown in the trunk of a hot car, to have good flavor when they reach the table.

Quick and easy field care is all that is required to preserve the meat’s high quality. The only tools you need to clean game birds are a sharp pocketknife and an inexpensive pair of pruning shears for severing bones.

Opening the body cavity and removing the entrails allows the meat to cool and helps eliminate the chance that viscera punctured by shot will fill the body cavity with blood and digestive fluids that can taint the meat.

Remove the innards and wipe the body cavity with a clean, dry cloth. In hot weather hang birds from a strap on your belt rather than carrying them in a game pouch where air circulation is poor. Some hunters carry their birds in a free hand as they walk back to their vehicle. Keep an ice chest in the vehicle so birds can be put on ice as quickly as possible.

Improve Dove Hunting Success This Fall
Would you like to increase your dove hunting success this fall? You can, but first you have to admit to yourself that when you’ve gone home with less than a limit of doves it wasn’t because the dove population was down or because you hadn’t seen any birds, the problem was that you missed a bunch of what should have been easy shots.

The good news is, you can easily improve your wing shooting skills by patterning your shotgun and practicing shooting some clay targets before opening day on Sept. 1.

To determine the best dove loads for your particular shotgun, buy a 48-inch-wide roll of inexpensive brown or white paper – freezer paper works well – and cut four sheets, each 4 feet square, for each load and brand of shell to be tested.

Tack a sheet of the paper to a stiff background and with a black marking pen draw a 30-inch circle with a small circle in the center for an aiming point. Shoot at the center circle once. If you are patterning a 12, 16 or 20 gauge shotgun, shoot from 40 yards; a .410 or 28 gauge, shoot from 30 yards.

If you are patterning your shotgun for doves, use standard field loads containing No. 7 ½ or 8 shot, which are the usual choices dove shooting. There are 350 No. 7 ½ lead pellets in an ounce, and 410 No. 8 lead pellets in an ounce.

Count the number of holes within the circle, compare that number with the number of pellets in the charge and figure the percentage. Do this at least four times and average the results.

If the barrel has a full choke, 70 to 80 percent of the shot should be within the circle. A modified choke should put 55 to 60 percent of the shot in the circle and an improved cylinder choke about 45 percent.

To determine how different brands of shells, loads and shot sizes perform while you are hunting, try shooting at other paper squares from the distance at which you take most of your shots. It is surprising how different loads perform in different guns. Some patterns will have large areas where there is little or no shot, some will be very tight and others will be “blown” with too much space between pellets.

Input Sought on Waterfowl Regulations
LINCOLN, Neb. – The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission will conduct a public hearing July 27 regarding waterfowl hunting seasons.

The Board of Commissioners, in its regular meeting, will provide waterfowl information and receive public input. The meeting will be held at the Holiday Inn Express in Columbus. Commissioners also are expected to adopt regulations regarding early teal, Canada goose and youth waterfowl seasons.

In recent years, the Commission has not received information from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service necessary for season-setting until just prior to the July and August meetings, giving staff, Commissioners and the public little time to consider their preferences among season alternatives. The public-input process started earlier this year to improve communication among season-setting participants.

The July public hearing will help Commission staff make recommendations for the board’s consideration and final adoption of regular duck and goose seasons at its Aug. 31 meeting in Ponca.

Although final information from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is pending, preliminary staff recommendations for the 2007 hunting seasons are listed below. Recommendations may change, pending biological data and public input.

Gifford Point WMA Access Permit Application
LINCOLN, Neb. -- Anyone interested in hunting deer at Gifford Point Wildlife Management Area (WMA) this year may apply for access permits from July 15-Aug. 15, according to Pat Molini, southeast district wildlife manager for the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission.

Molini said 200 authorization permits will be issued to allow deer hunters access to the area, located along the Missouri River adjacent to Bellevue.

To be eligible to apply, hunters must have a valid statewide archery, statewide muzzleloader or Season Choice Area 21 deer permit. Successful applicants will be issued a key for the access gate to the WMA. Only hunters holding a valid access authorization will be allowed on the WMA from Sept. 1 through the end of the deer seasons.

Deer hunters may apply as "buddies," which means both or neither will draw an access permit. Only two hunters may apply as buddies and both applications must be submitted in the same envelope. A buddy permit does not allow party hunting. Each hunter must harvest his or her own animal.

Vehicle access will be limited to the rock road adjacent to the 8-foot-high deer fence on Educational Service Unit property. Only foot access to the interior of the WMA is allowed.

Application forms are available at Commission offices in Lincoln, Omaha, the Ak-Sar-Ben Aquarium near Gretna and Schilling WMA near Plattsmouth. If more than 200 applications are received, a drawing will be held Aug. 18 at the Commission’s Lincoln office.

Hunters May Purchase Remaining Deer Permits Beginning 1 p.m. June 11
LINCOLN, Neb. – Beginning at 1 p.m. June 11, resident and nonresident deer hunters may purchase any remaining firearm, youth, season choice, archery or muzzleloader permits for Nebraska’s 2007 deer hunting seasons.

Nebraska’s 2007 regular firearm deer hunting season will be Nov. 10-18. The archery deer hunting season will be Sept.15 - Nov. 9 and Nov.19 through Dec. 31 (the archery season will be closed during the regular November firearm season, Nov. 10-18). The muzzleloader season will be Dec.1-31. There are unlimited archery and muzzleloader permits available.

Resident and nonresident hunters may purchase permits within permit limits beginning at 1 p.m., June 11. Hunters may obtain no more than two permits that allow the taking of a buck. There is no limit to the antlerless-only permits a hunter may have. Permits will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis both online at the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission’s Web site at www.OutdoorNebraska.org, and over the counter from Commission offices in Alliance, Bassett, Kearney, Norfolk, North Platte, Omaha, Lincoln, and at the Ak-Sar- Ben Aquarium. Completed application forms will also be accepted by mail at the Commission’s Lincoln office at 2200 N. 33rd Street, Lincoln, 68503.

LINCOLN, Neb. -- Young archers will compete in the Nebraska High School 3D Championship 8 a.m.-2 p.m., June 16 in Norfolk.

Birds Plentiful on Opening Weekend of Spring Shotgun Turkey Season
LINCOLN, Neb. – Hunters were more difficult to spot than birds during the opening weekend of the spring shotgun turkey season, according to the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission.

The season opened April 14 to mostly ideal weather, with many turkeys spotted and hunters spread out, according to the Commission’s law enforcement division. Conservation officers reported that the birds were mostly in groups, with toms sticking close to hens. There were many reports of hunters having difficulty calling turkeys in, especially after morning.

“Hunting will only get better as toms seek new hens and become more responsive to calls,” said Craig Stover, an assistant administrator for the law enforcement division.

Success rates around the state varied from fair to moderate to good, and hunting pressure ranged from light to moderate. The weather was reported as sunny skies with little or no wind.

The large statewide population of turkeys made it possible for the liberalization of regulations this spring. Hunters may now purchase three statewide spring turkey permits, compared to two in past years.

Crappie Length Limits Lifted During April at Wehrspann, Zorinsky Lakes
LINCOLN, Neb. –– Crappie length limits have been lifted at two popular Omaha- area lakes during April in hopes of helping to control crappie numbers, according to the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission.

The normal 10-inch length limit on crappie is not in effect at Wehrspann and Zorinsky lakes during April, but the 10-fish daily bag limit remains in effect year-round.

On May 1, the normal 10-inch length limit on crappies will again be in effect at both lakes.

Harvest Records Set During Nebraska’s 2006 Deer Hunting Seasons
LINCOLN, Neb. – Hunters killed a record total of 65,091 deer in Nebraska during the 2006 hunting seasons, 4,200 more deer than ever before, according to Kit Hams, the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission’s big game program manager.

During the November firearm season, hunters took 43,081 deer, a success rate of 61 percent; 4,164 deer were taken during the muzzleloader season, a success rate of 26 percent, compared to 4,771 deer in 2005; and archers took 4,596 deer, a success rate of 29 percent, compared to 4,283 deer taken by bowhunters in 2005.

Spring Turkey Permits Now Available!
LINCOLN, Neb. – Hunters may now purchase permits for the spring turkey season, a season that will offer better opportunities than ever, according to the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission.

For the first time, turkey hunters may purchase up to three permits for the spring season. The permits may be any combination of shotgun and archery tags, are unlimited in number, and all are valid statewide. Permits may be purchased through May 20.

Nebraska Artists Reminded Habitat Stamp Contest Entries Are Due March 1
LINCOLN, Neb. -- Nebraska artists, both amateur and professional, are reminded that it’s time to get started on artwork they want to enter in the 2007 Habitat Stamp Art Contest sponsored by the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission and the Omaha Fish and Wildlife Club. The deadline is March 1, 2007.

Artists interested in submitting an entry should visit the contest Web page for specific rules and entry requirements for the 2007 contest because there have been some changes this year.

Hunters Can Apply for a Nebraska Statewide Deer Permit Through April 13
LINCOLN, Neb. – Resident and nonresident deer hunters who want to buy a Nebraska 2007 statewide deer hunting permit such as a November firearm statewide buck permit, archery, muzzleloader or youth permit, may do so through April 13.

Kit Hams, Nebraska Game and Parks Commission big game program manager, said the early application period for statewide permits and a change that makes the number of November firearm statewide deer permits unlimited were made to better meet resident and nonresident demand, and to help hunters plan their deer hunts earlier in the year. Permit applications will be available to hunters at all January and February sport shows and permits will be available at some shows

Plans for Big Boost for pheasants!
MN DNR - Capitalizing on well-funded farm programs would boost Minnesota's average pheasant harvest 24 percent to 450,000 birds by 2008, under a plan announced today by the Department of Natural Resources (DNR).

"Pheasant populations depend largely on our ability to influence land-use practices on private farmland," said Bill Penning, DNR farmland wildlife program leader. "One way the DNR and other agencies are doing that is by funding technicians who promote landowner enrollment in programs available through the federal farm bill"...
